Books and Breakfast

Books and Breakfast is one of the first programs created by NGAN Excel. Inspired by our love for the students of Dallas, this program focuses on providing literacy skills, tutoring aid, and access to local resources for all kids and their families.

Each event includes:

  • A warm breakfast for each attendee (parents included)

  • A local author, read-aloud (or a read-aloud performed by a leader in the community)

  • Literacy enrichment activities directly connected to the featured book

  • Activities teaching the importance of nutritious foods

  • Opportunities for families to take pictures together

  • A book to take home (provided by our sponsors)

  • Tutoring and homework aid

  •

In addition, we provide parents with critical information on free resources available in the community. This information can include classes on how to create powerful résumés, find and access modern news materials like The New York Times, retrieve discounted transportation passes, and enrichment activities they can take home and work on with their children.

Our goal is to increase literacy opportunities for our kids by providing a variety of positive interactions with reading, access to high-interest and relatable books, and potential improvement to family life. We hope this program will help bridge the gap our education system struggles to fill.

Community Education & Planning (CEP)

Successful Communities Make Successful Students and Successful Students Make Successful Communities! This belief is the heart of our CEP program. We know that in order for our students to succeed they need to have a strong support system, and we know that there is no better support system than their own community–the success is symbiotic.

Our program’s goal is to identify the issues within our community and student groups, then create the kind of structures each one needs in order to flourish. One part of our program takes place on your campus, and the other within your student's actual community.

Facilitators will work with your students in weekly focused sessions, while our CELL (Community Education Leader & Liaison) actively works within the community to bring the two groups together. This might look like expanding knowledge of and creating solutions for community and societal issues, aiding students in reaching their academic goals, learning how to balance their social-emotional health, or teaching them the direct connections between what they learn in school and the impact that has on their community.

In addition to being a facilitator, our CELL is a go-between for the community, students, and school. The goal is to build trust, respect and accountability between all parties. This would look like holding regular community meetings to discuss relevant issues and solutions, creating workshops, online resources, and community events to educate members on all public school systems, policies, and procedures (local and federal), or keeping families up-to-date on school programs, trends, and important initiatives offered by the district.

At the end of the day our goals are to:

  • Academically prepare and increase graduation rates

  • Help students find a sustainable future pathway

  • Find solutions to issues impacting the community

  • Creating sustainable support systems for both students and the community

  • Improve the relationships between community, students, and schools

  • Expand community and student knowledge of the education system

The Regeneration Project

The Regen Project is currently in the placement process for multiple campuses in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

The program was created to address the growing need for our students' social and emotional development. Our program gives students of all ages the tools needed to solve social problems critically, identify their actions' impact on others, and restore the balance of their school community while creating a more positive and engaging climate and culture.

Our goal with The Regen Project is to help decrease incidents of misconduct, in-school suspension, detention, and negative hallway behavior.

GRACE

GRACE is our Gang Reduction and Community Empowerment violence interruption program. Inspired by our team's personal and first-hand experiences with gang activity in our community, our biggest passion lies in breaking the school-to-prison pipeline generational bond.

Each of our teams comprises of people who were previously initiated into the various gangs within Dallas County, and those whose lives were directly impacted by them. We believe that our community members are the best resources for showing youth that there are other options available, and know what resources these kids need to shift them onto a different path.

While advocating for the youth, our team works to involve them in healthy relationships within their community, work to increase the involvement of beneficial extracurricular activities, promote healthy lifestyles, and give youth access to educational materials that provide hard evidence on the long history of gangs in our city and the destruction they have promoted.

Our hope is to eradicate youth gang involvement in Dallas County while deviating current participants from their ongoing involvement. We aspire to be a leading resource in significantly lowering the rates of gang affiliation among youth and teens in DISD schools and throughout our city.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

Although progress has been made in bringing more equity to our schools and communities, we know we have a ways to go before reaching the levels needed to heal and drastically uplift them.

This is why we have partnered with SEEDS (Serve, Educate and Empower Diverse Students), a powerful mental health and wellness organization, Kensington Arts and Education, an art-infused social-emotional development organization, and DREAM Education, a leading education consultant company that works to propel nonprofit organizations forward in their missions and goals. Together, we are all focused on improving the diversity, equity, inclusion, and wellness of our students.

Our DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) program is based on conglomerations, common visions, and partnerships with local communities, schools, and corporations. Together we work to identify the needs of our youth and create strategies that place diversity, equity, and inclusion at the center of our solutions.

Urban L.E.A.D

Our Urban L.E.A.D. program was created to help our male African-American student population. Our goal with this program is to help our students Learn, Emerge, and Advocate for their Dreams with the mentored help of a positive and influential role model.

  • Each male African American student–Called a Mentee–will be paired with a professionally trained Mentor. Together they will work to create a customized plan to reach goals, create plans for the future they want to have, grow emotionally, and improve their academic achievements. In addition, they would participate in:

  • Cultural and educationally relevant activities

  • Interactive curricula

  • And events that increase the involvement of parents and guardians

  • With proven studies backing the success of purposeful mentor programs like ours, we are helping our African-American students increase their self-esteem, improve their self-confidence, and help repair and enhance their relationships with family, friends and peers.

Tutoring EC-12

In partnership with SEEDS and DREAM Education, our tutoring program provides a robust and much needed academic aid for students, starting in early childhood  development and continuing throughout high school.

Our program is unique in that it offers professional development that connects our tutoring facilitators to  the community they are serving, thus helping ensure that culturally responsive approaches are used to maximize learning and student engagement.

By providing experienced tutors who have a passion for promoting academic excellence for struggling learners, underserved populations, and other diverse populations, we will be able to give our students inclusive and tailored support that will increase their chances of success.
